The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) has three options for individuals working in the hazardous materials field:
Only IHMM offers the prestigious CHMM and CHMP credentials and the HMMT designation!
All examinations are held through the proctored Kryterion HOST® network, at about 200 computer-testing locations across the United States and Canada.

Specific information on each credential follows below. For general information on the certification process, click on these links:
Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)®
IHMM's trademark CHMM program recognizes your expertise and opens new possibilities for you to make a significant impact on your community and your country. Corporations, universities and government agencies depend on the CHMM certification to identify hazardous materials professionals like you.
All candidates for CHMM certification must meet two basic prerequisites:
A baccalaureate degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university in hazardous materials management, environmental science, one of the physical sciences, or a related field
A minimum of three years of relevant experience in the field of hazardous materials management or a realted field.
To become a CHMM, one must meet these requirements, and pass a multiple-choice examination professionally developed and administered by IHMM. Eligibility to sit for the exam is determined by the candidate's education and experience. See CHMM Requirements for more information.
All applications must be accompanied by the non-refundable $100 application fee, a signed Application Consent Statement, and a detailed work history or resume. An official, original college transcript and two reference evaluations are also required prior to final approval, but they may arrive separately from the application.
The CHMM examination will be available in testing windows during the last two weeks of odd-numbered months. The schedule for the next six months is as follows*:
July 18-31, 2008
September 17-30, 2008
November 15-30, 2008
*Please note that many testing centers will likely be closed for federal holidays that fall within our testing windows, such as Thanksgiving Day in November. Each testing center has its own hours of operation and seating availability within our windows.

Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP)TM
IHMM is pleased to announce the launch of the application and examination process for the Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP) credential!
The CHMP is designed for hazmat workers without baccalaureate degrees. It has been developed as a standard of proficiency for hazardous materials workers. Acquiring the CHMP credential for yourself and/or recommending it to your colleagues will provide added assurance to both you and your employer of the secure and proper handling and management of hazardous materials in the workplace. The CHMP is intended to enhance regulatory compliance, safety, and overall credibility of operations, and provide recognition to individuals who meet its rigorous requirements.
Candidates for CHMP certification must pass a multiple-choice examination professionally developed by IHMM. Your experience (or education plus experience) will determine your eligibility to sit for the exam. See CHMP requirements for more information on relevant types of experience and the application process.
There are two ways to qualify:
You must have at least 5 years of relevant experience with responsibilities directly related to the handling of hazardous materials and/or waste in the workplace;
--OR--
You must have an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree from an accredited college or university in hazardous materials management, environmental science, environmental management, or environmental technology, plus 3 years of relevant experience as described above.
All applications must be accompanied by the non-refundable $100 application fee, a signed Application Consent Statement, and a detailed work history or resume. Two reference evaluations are also required prior to final approval (as well as an official, original transcript of the AAS degree, if applicable), but they may arrive separately from the application.
The CHMP examination will be available in testing windows during the last two weeks of even-numbered months. The schedule for the next six months is as follows*:
June 17-30, 2008
August 18-31, 2008
October 18-31, 2008
*Please note that many testing centers will likely be closed for federal holidays that fall within our testing windows. Each testing center has its own hours of operation and seating availability within our windows.

Hazardous Materials Manager-in-Training (HMMT)TM
The Hazardous Materials Manager-in-Training (HMMT) is a designation designed to introduce young professionals into the CHMM program. Candidates with a BS/BA degree, but little or no experience, should consider this designation, which is designed for those entering the hazardous materials workforce.
On June 4, 2004, the IHMM Board of Directors created this program which enables young professionals to:
Sit for the HMMT examination at any time between the final semester of their senior year of undergraduate study and up the point of having achieved three years of experience.
Take just the science and basic technology portions of the CHMM examination while those topics are fresh, and then be exempted from taking those parts of the exam when they qualify to take the CHMM examination.
Find out more about the HMMT program!
All application submissions should be accompanied by the non-refundable $50 application fee; an official, original college transcript is also required, but it may arrive separately from the application. (Students in their final semester of earning a BA/BS degree may be eligible; contact an Exam Coordinator for more information.)
The HMMT examination schedule over the next several months is as follows*:
May 5-17, 2008
September 2-16, 2008
*Please note that each testing center has its own hours of operation and seating availability within our windows.

College Transcript Requirements
When a college degree is a prerequisite for the credential or designation that you wish to pursue, IHMM requires an official transcript from the accredited college or university in the United States which conferred your degree. (Acceptable accreditation is one which is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation, or CHEA.) We require an official transcript with a registrar's original stamp or seal (not a photocopy) showing your achievement of a degree, which must be on file at the IHMM Executive Office before you can register for an examination.
Degrees acquired through foreign colleges or universities are acceptable if they are documented as equivalent to an AAS or BS/BA degree issued in the United States. See our FAQ's section for more information. If the applicant holds an additional degree in a relevant field from an accredited U.S. college or university, only the U.S. college transcript needs to be submitted, and a degree equivalency report will not be required.

Exam Results and Retake Policy
All candidates will be notified of their examination results in writing, approximately 3 weeks after sitting for the examination. Successful candidates will be notified of the next steps required toward certification. Non-successful candidates will be provided with a print-out of the specific area(s) of weakness in their performance on the examination.
A candidate who fails the examination must wait at least six months before retaking it, and may be granted no more than two retakes within 18 months of the original exam date. The candidate shall pay the examination fee but need not submit a new application.
After a third unsuccessful sitting, a candidate must wait at least one year from the date of the last attempt to be eligible to take the examination again, and must submit a new application form and full fees for each new sitting. The candidate must also meet whatever eligibility requirements are in effect at that time.
For more information, see IHMM Policies.

Credential Maintenance
The CHMM and CHMP credentials require a Certification Maintenance fee to be paid annually, in order to remain in good standing. The HMMT designation also requires an annual renewal fee, in order to remain eligible to take the abbreviated CHMM exam once the necessary work experience to qualify for the credential has been accrued.
The field of hazardous materials management changes over time. For that reason, accreditation standards require that certification be renewed periodically. To ensure that everyone certified through IHMM stays current on developments in the industry, it is required that CHMMs and CHMPs recertify every five years.
The recertification schedule is based on the initial certification or last recertification date. To meet this requirement, you must either submit documentation of your employment and professional development activities for your 5-year cycle, or take and pass the CHMM/CHMP exam again.
There is a fee of $75 for recertification processing, due with your submission. Once received, your submission will be processed in 6-8 weeks. If you choose to take the exam instead, you must submit an updated resume and pay the examination fee (currently $250).
If you have questions, please contact our Recertification Coordinator.
