IHMM & HMS Coronavirus Resources

In February of 2020, the World Health Organization’s director-general has declared a public health emergency of international concern over the ongoing outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel coronavirus. On March 13, 2020, President Trump declared a national emergency for the United States. IHMM and HMS’s first concern is with the safety and health of all of us; our staff and families, colleagues, certificants, and members. We will update this page regularly as credible, authoritative information is available. See: https://ihmm.org/coronavirus-resources/

IHMM Credential Recertification – Earning CMPs Made Easy and Inexpensive – CSHM and CSMP Transition Plan

As a CSHM or CSMP, when your credential was administered by ISHM you had to earn 30 or 20 certification maintenance points over 5 years. At IHMM, you have to earn 200 points; 100 points are awarded for the job you do and you need to earn at least another 100 points over 5 years. IHMM is working on a recertification transition plan to enable all CSHM and CSMP credential holders to qualify under IHMM’s recertification standards easily and without additional points during the transition period.

Here is the draft EHS/CSHM and CSMP recertification transition plan. This draft was presented to the IHMM Board at their September 11, 2020 Board meeting and is being worked on now. If you would like to comment on this plan please send an email to [email protected].

By creating the Hazardous Materials Society, IHMM has made it easier to find courses certificants can take to earn CMPs toward recertification. We’ve also worked with education and training program vendors to add inexpensive or even free courses as well.

Go here >> https://hazmatsociety.org/education-training/

Scroll down to the search bar…and see this…

Certificants may choose to simply click on the CMPs button. Or, if you want to narrow your search by cost, you can adjust the slider to show you courses within a certain price range. Then click SUBMIT, and courses with CMPs within the price range you set will appear.

Taking courses is not the only way certificants may earn CMPs toward recertification. For more information about all of the ways you may earn CMPs simply go here and read the Recertification Claims Handbook.

CSHM and CSMP – Become a Mentor

IHMM’s Collaboration platform provides CHMM’s opportunity to become mentors to Student CHMMs. IHMM’s Student CHMM pilot program involves students from Columbia Southern University, where we already have 50 applicants, as well as Kennesaw State University that is kicking off their participation in the pilot program this fall.

Mentors may decide how many mentees they are willing to work with, for how long, and how they wish to be engaged. Mentors decide how many hours per week or month they can commit to becoming mentors.

This is a unique opportunity for CHMMs to work with students still in school and advise them on their courses of study as well as plan for their future as they graduate and look for opportunities in the job market toward a path to one day becoming a CHMM themselves.

IHMM is now planning on how we can connect CSHMs with ASHMs and enable CSHMs to mentor ASHMs as they work toward taking their CSHM exam. Before we launch the program we need to know if there are CSHMs that would volunteer to become mentors.

If this idea interests you as a CSHM, and becoming a mentor to ASHMs is something you would consider doing, please send an email to Kaylene at [email protected] and let us know.

HMS Affinity Programs: Affordable Health Insurance for Smaller Companies

Hazardous Materials Society has a series of affinity programs designed to save you money and make your lives a bit easier. Check out

The respected Kaiser Family Foundation recently reported that the cost of family health coverage now exceeds $20,000 a year – a record high cost that is pushing an increasing number of Americans into plans that cover less and cost more or force them out of health insurance altogether.

Haven’t you had enough of the health insurance industry/government exchanges run-around where you have few if any, choices and ever-increasing costs?

HMS has worked with the best people in the health insurance industry to deliver a program exclusively for HMS members that solve this problem. The HMS Health Insurance Program empowers our small to medium-sized businesses with stronger coverage at a lower cost than is found in the ACA commercial marketplaces where you get insurance today.

A Collaborative Culture at IHMM & HMS
There are 219 different conversations going on in the IHMM/HMS Collaboration platform this week. A collaborative culture is important for every business but is especially important for our hazardous materials, dangerous goods, environment, health, and safety communities of practice. IHMM credentialed professionals are at the top 1% of their professions and their reach is global. We are at the forefront of environmental protection, health, and safety and this is where collaborating with the best people in their fields, always willing to help one another, lessens the stress of our jobs and where we strive as a team to make a difference of which we are proud.

We opened COLLABORATION to enable thousands of certificants and supporters to collaborate together. You can collaborate here> https://community.ihmm.org/home

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has published additional frequently asked questions and answers (FAQs) regarding the need to report employees’ in-patient hospitalizations and fatalities resulting from work-related cases of the coronavirus.

OSHA’s new FAQs provide information to help employers apply the agency’s existing injury and illness recording and reporting requirements to the coronavirus. In particular, the FAQs provide guidance on how to calculate reporting deadlines for in-patient hospitalizations and fatalities, and clarify the meaning of the term “incident” as it relates to work-related coronavirus in-patient hospitalizations and fatalities. These FAQs are the latest effort by OSHA to provide employers and employees with more information about how it will enforce its standards and regulations during the pandemic. OSHA has also previously published revised enforcement guidance detailing how OSHA will enforce the recordkeeping requirements of 29 CFR 1904 for employee coronavirus illnesses for all employers.

Visit OSHA’s coronavirus webpage frequently for updates. For further information about the coronavirus, please visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
