IHMM UPDATES

The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM) conducts a Job Task Analysis (JTA) to validate all certification examinations every five years, or more often if circumstances warrant.  The job analysis identifies the performance areas and associated knowledge, tasks, skills, and abilities relating to the credential.  During the JTA process, a new blueprint based on the consensus of the profession validated by survey participants.  The blueprint provides the areas of competency that a minimally qualified candidate must have to be deemed competent.

 U.S. Technical Advisory Group [TAG] on ISO 45000

Tom Slavin, CSHM, is our representative on the US technical advisory group (TAG) to ISO 45000.  The primary activity of the committee was the development of the ISO 45001 standard on safety and health management systems.  That standard activity is quiet now until it comes up for revision/reapproval in a couple of years.  In the meantime, there are several other committee activities that we thought you should be aware of:

• An implementation guide for ISO 45001 is being developed.
• A small business guide for ISO 45001 is being developed.
• ISO 45003 on the management of psychosocial stress is under development.  
• This new activity on safe work in pandemics is being introduced.

IHMM Excellence in EHS Management Award

Each year IHMM is proud to recognizer the outstanding achievements and distinction of the CSHM, CSMP, or ASHM that has made a worthy contribution to the communities of practice and the profession.

This award is usually given at the annual National Safety Council Congress.

Nominations begin in May and end of December 2020 for just this year as the National Safety Council has moved their 2021 Congress and Expo to March of 2021, and we will make this award there.

Last week IHMM wrote that it would be a miracle if the Senate and House finished the next iteration of COVID-19 legislation in the first week of August. Unfortunately, we were correct. House, Senate, and White House negotiators are still far apart in their efforts to complete legislation.
