After a marathon vote-a-rama to consider floor amendments and to negotiate various provisions with hold-out Senators, today the Senate passed H.R. 1 by a vote of 51-50. The House is out this week, but Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is calling House Republicans back from recess and targeting a Wednesday vote to try to meet Trump’s July 4 deadline. The Senate has officially passed the tax package, which includes language from the Freedom to Invest in Tomorrow’s Workforce Act!
On Saturday, the 28th, the Senate held a vote on a “motion to proceed,” an important procedural vote to determine if the legislation can be brought to the floor. The vote was 51-49, just barely passing.
As we have reported in every IHMM Today sent to IHMM’s certificants each Tuesday, IHMM is on the Steering Committee of the Tomorrow’s Workforce Coalition, and as we said many times, we have fought all year for the language that we got into the legislation that benefits every certificant, allowing for the use of IRS 529 plans to pay for certification expenses. In addition, IHMM is also on the Steering Committee of the Community Impact Coalition to make sure Congress does not subject nonprofit corporations to taxation. Pending the final vote in the House this week, we have succeeded in achieving both objectives. Out of a 1,100-page bill, we have about 2 pages of language that we succeeded in getting into the legislation. As with all legislation, that doesn’t mean we necessarily support the entire bill, but we have strong interests in certain parts of the legislation.
Thank you for your efforts on this important issue and for being a valued member of the Tomorrow’s Workforce Coalition!
H.R. 1151 has 194 co-sponsors in the House. S 756 has 16 co-sponsors in the Senate.
