Student ASHM

IHMM’s Student Associate Safety & Health Manager (ST/ASHM™) credential recognizes students who wish to demonstrate their development of knowledge and skills in safety and health management in the workplace while pursuing their undergraduate or graduate degree.

Benefits of a Student ASHM Credential

There are 1.5 million Bachelor’s degrees awarded by universities and colleges every year. The average student spends thousands of dollars to achieve something that 1.5 million other students also have. While undeniably valuable, you need more than a Bachelor’s degree to clearly distinguish yourself from everyone else in a highly competitive job market. That’s where professional certification becomes so valuable to you.

With IHMM and the Student ASHM credential, you enter a path to being in the top 1% of your professional community.

Student ASHMs Are Eligible for the IHMM Scholarship

In addition to the professional development benefits of a Student ASHM, the Student ASHM is also eligible for the IHMM Scholarship Program. Each year IHMM’s Scholarship Committee awards $16,000 to qualified Student ASHMs. Learn more about the IHMM Scholarship by navigating to this part of the IHMM website.

Eligibility Requirements

Your school needs to have been approved by the ASHM committee to participate in the Student ASHM program. You can find the list of approved schools here > Student ASHM approved schools. If your school is not on the approved list, then please contact your school about filing an application here > Register a school for the student ASHM program. The student applicant is required to meet the following:

1.

Prerequisites

  1. You are in a course of study in the areas of safety, workplace safety, or management that may lead you, after graduation, to a professional position in which the fully accredited CSHM credential is available.
  2. You are a Junior or later in school with 30 credit hours of undergraduate education in the courses cited above -or- 12 credit hours of associated graduate school education -or- have achieved a minimum of 1,500 hours of associated work experience in the safety, workplace safety, or management fields and have returned to school for additional education at an IHMM-approved undergraduate or graduate school.

2.

College Transcript

Submit your class attendance and credited undergraduate or graduate level course work grades and dates from your school.

3.

Relevant Experience

Relevant experience includes, but is not limited to, the following examples:

If you choose to record 30 undergraduate or 12 graduate credit hours of specific instruction that addresses learning objectives [associated education] in the area of environmental safety and health, you must record all credited education hours regardless of when they were accrued. IHMM will only accept evidence of course work that has been completed through the transcripts from the college or university. “Associated education” means education associated with the core safety and health management principles of the credential. Management courses would be “associated education,” while Modern 21st Century Cinema would not.

Examination Preparation

Candidates need to be familiar with relevant laws and regulations, relevant scientific principles and their application, and best management practices. Many candidates attend overview courses or use self-study materials to prepare for the examination. IHMM does not require any specific type of exam preparation or training and the exams are not based on any single reference.

IHMM credentialing programs and examinations are based on an Exam Specifications “blueprint.” The blueprints govern the competency requirements for each credential and provide the outline of topics for the examinations. Examination questions are developed from the blueprints and applicants base their examination study on the blueprint.

Please see the Candidate Handbook for additional information

Student ASHM Blueprint

The Student ASHM examination is a testing instrument designed to provide the student candidate with a brief introduction to the general breadth of information one should be familiar with at this stage of their professional and academic development. The Student ASHM examination on which this blueprint is based is not the same type or scope of secure examination the candidate will need to take and pass to become a fully credentialed CSHM later in a career.

Accreditation
and Recognition

The Student ASHM credential is not accredited, as it is designed to provide an introduction to private, professional certifications while the student is still in school. The full professional credentials that come after the Student ASHM are fully accredited.

We are at the forefront of environmental protection, health, and safety and this is where collaborating with the best people in their fields, always willing to help one another, lessens the stress of our jobs and where we strive as a team to make a difference of which we are proud.

Policies and
Code of Ethics

Per the guidance of our accreditation authorities and our internal leadership, IHMM has a variety of policies that bear on our impartiality, our Code of Ethics, our regard for the privacy of your information and data, nondiscrimination, and additional federal guidelines for access to our tests and facilities. Everyone needs to be familiar with these policies as every applicant will be asked to affirm having read, understood, and agrees to be bound by all of these policies in the application process.

Recertification of Your Credential

The Student CHMM does not have a recertification available as the credential is designed for students. This section is the same as a Student CHMM will see in other accredited credentials so that you will become familiar with that is ahead as you progress on to higher level credentials. Congratulations. After hard work and dedication, you earned your professional credential. Now, every 5 years you will need to recertify your valuable credential. Over 5 years you need to earn 200 certification maintenance points or CMPs. You receive 100 CMPs for the job you perform, and then need to earn a minimum of another 100 CMPs in a variety of ways demonstrating your commitment to continuous improvement and remaining current with the demands of your profession and our communities of practice. As there is no recertification for the Student CHMM, Student ASHM or the ASHM, this section does not apply to the Student CHMM, Student ASHM, or the ASHM credentials.

Considering everything you did to achieve certification, don’t let it go to waste by failing to recertify.

IHMM will remind you, fairly often, about your impending recertification deadline. If you follow the steps outlined below you will find this process fairly easy to accomplish. Start with the advice in Step #1!

Step 1

Be proactive and enter your CMPs as you earn them. CMPs must be claimed following the guidelines in the IHMM Recertification Handbook.

Step 2

In your MYIHMM account, start your recertification application now to track CMPs as you go.

Step 3

Keep your employment status and professional information current in your MYIHMM account.

Step 4

In your 5th year, make sure all information is correct, confirm your minimum of 200 CMPs, and submit application. Don’t worry, we’ll remind you along the way, too!

Step 5

Audits. Keep records of employment and CMPs requested. We may check in from time to time to assure accuracy.

Following these simple steps will make your recertification simple and easy to complete. Go to your online MYIHMM account, using your unique username and password.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact Jimmy Nguyen at [email protected] or Jim Drosdak at [email protected] and someone will assist you.

Reinstatement

An individual who previously held an IHMM certification that has not been decertified on ethical grounds may apply to have his or her certification reinstated if their annual fees have been expired for less than five (5) years and/or their decertified certification has been expired for less than five (5) years.

If either condition is not met, the individual must go through the full certification process to become certified again.

Reinstatement is not a reversal of decertification. All time in service is lost at the time of decertification. For more information regarding the reversal of decertification, please refer to IHMM’s Decertification Appeal Policy.

Evidence of knowing continued use of a decertified certification after having been provided notice of decertification by IHMM is a violation of your certification agreement and is unethical, and will render the individual ineligible for reinstatement.
