What or who motivated you to earn an IHMM credential?

It was several years after the start of my professional career before I became serious about seeking professional credentials. Julian Mercer, who is a good friend of mine through our volunteer work with the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP), and I were working towards achieving our ASP and CSP credentials at relatively the same time. Julian also holds the Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) credential with IHMM and encouraged me to look into the Certified School Safety Manager (CSSM) credential. The CSSM credential was more geared towards my niche in the school safety profession and I am grateful that Julian alerted me that the credential was available. I have passed that advice onto several other school safety professionals.

Are there any opportunities you’re looking forward to as a result of earning an IHMM credential?

An opportunity I did not foresee was being asked to serve on the IHMM committee that contributed to the development of the blueprint and study domains that will be used for future CSSM candidates. It was an eye-opening experience as far as the amount of hard work and length of time it takes from professionals all over the United States to evaluate and verify that a credential holds value for future candidates.

What would you say to someone who is considering earning an IHMM credential?

If you are serious about your selected career and intend to advance and remain in your particular field then do not delay in the achievement of certifications. As my career advanced over the years from the side of the table to being interviewed to the side of the table where I was the one conducting the interview, I realized that when sifting through resumes the ones with the credentials went to the top of the pile to be selected for an interview. Then the rest is up to you.
