Richard Thomas Cartwright, age 78, of East Amherst, New York, beloved husband, father, grandfather, colleague, mentor, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on April 21, 2025. His unconditional generosity, boundless energy, and unwavering devotion to his family made him a true pillar of love and support.

With a career spanning over five decades, Rich was a legend in the Environmental, Health & Safety, and Hazardous Materials Management industry. To those he worked with, he was more than just a colleague. He was a connector, a mentor, a champion of shared knowledge, and a tireless advocate for environmental health, safety, and responsibility. He was a firm believer in building meaningful connections and communities using his passion for collaboration and education to empower others and spark positive change. His passion for mentorship inspired hundreds if not thousands, and his encouragement left an indelible mark on generations of environmental professionals.

Above all, Rich adored his family. He is survived by his wife Phyllis (Russell); daughter Erin and son-in-law Michael; son Bryan and daughter-in-law Christina; and four beautiful granddaughters: Alanda, Kiellian, Elayne, and Eryca. He is also survived by two sisters: Brenda, and Carol; one brother, Alan; and predeceased by his parents, Eric James and Edith Estelle (Zuber).

Rich had a larger-than-life personality that was impossible to miss, and even harder to forget. He left a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the family he cherished, the countless friends and colleagues he supported, and the many lives he touched with his wisdom, humor, and generous heart.

A celebration of life will be held at Sean Patrick’s Restaurant, 3480 Millersport Hwy., Getzville, NY 14068 on Saturday, June 21, 2025 from 5-8pm.
