Founded in 1984, the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management (IHMM), a not-for-profit organization, has been protecting the environment and the public’s health, safety, and security through the creation of credentials recognizing professionals who have demonstrated a high level of knowledge, expertise, and excellence in the management of hazardous materials, transportation of dangerous goods, environmental protection, health and safety.

Founded in 1984…

Over 17,000 homeland security, environmental protection, engineering, health sciences, transportation, and public safety professionals have earned IHMM’s accredited Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM®) credential. IHMM also administers the Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP®), the Certified Dangerous Goods Professional (CDGP®), and the Certified Dangerous Goods Trainer (CDGT®) credentials. In 2019, IHMM acquired ISHM and now manages the Certified Health and Safety Manager [CSHM], Certified Safety Management Practitioner [CSMP], Associate Safety and Health Manager [ASHM], Certified School Safety Specialist [CSSS], and Certified School Safety Manager [CSSM] credentials.

IHMM’s Top 1% Credentials…

Earning IHMM Credentials provide many benefits, including improved career prospects and enhanced earning power. Survey results indicate that the median annual base salary of individuals holding a credential from IHMM - is $100,000, about 20 percent greater than the median annual base salary of survey respondents who held no certification; $83,000. Further, when years of experience are taken into account, salaries are approximately 10 percent higher for IHMM certificate holders with 5 to 14 years’ experience than a professional with the same experience not holding a credential.

IHMM credentials have been granted accreditation by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The CHMM and CHMP credentials were accredited in 2009 and CDGP was accredited in 2015. The ANSI accreditation program is based on the International Standard ANSI/ISO/IEC 17024.

IHMM’s CHMM, CHMP, CSMP, and CSHM certification programs are accredited by The Council of Engineering & Scientific Specialty Boards (CESB). CESB is an independent, voluntary membership body for organizations that recognize, through specialty certification, the expertise of individuals practicing in engineering and related fields.

IHMM is pleased to announce that the American National Standards Institute [ANSI] has approved Kryterion Remotely Proctored Exams for IHMM’s CHMM, CHMP, and CDGP exams. IHMM has been using the Kryterion Remotely Proctored Exams for the CSHM and CSMP exams since April of this year.

About 60% of Kryterion in-person testing centers have reopened. If you prefer the comfort and convenience of taking your exam from your home or office instead of at a Kryterion center, IHMM is ready to enroll you in a remotely proctored examination.
