Previous certifications held?
I obtained my CHMM certification as my first certification a long time ago, in the mid-1990s, after I had been working at an environmental consulting and engineering firm for several years. My officemate at the time did a careful screening of all available certification options, and we both decided to pursue CHMM certification in the end. I have been careful to maintain it ever since.
What or who motivated you to earn an IHMM credential?
I have always worked in environmental consulting, primarily in what I would call “compliance assistance.” That tends to involve a lot of environmental compliance auditing and working to resolve compliance deficiencies. There are many college degrees, including environmental engineering, that provide a foundation for addressing environmental challenges, but few that align well with the applied environmental regulatory compliance. The CHMM certification seems to demonstrate a layer of working knowledge relating to real-life environmental management strategies.
What would you say to someone who is considering earning an IHMM credential?
As president of AARCHER, an environmental consulting, training, and recruiting organization (aarcherinc.com), I encourage our technical staff to pursue CHMM certification at their earliest opportunity. The process of obtaining the certification ensures they delve into all environmental topics, including those where they do not have direct previous experience, and our clients are reassured that our staff are well qualified to support them. Our staff currently includes a number of CHMMs, and those who have moved on to other positions have maintained the credential they obtained while at AARCHER.
