IHMM Business Leaders Academy Starts September 9th
FREE 49CFR Train the Trainer Program – October 12-14, 2026
The IHMM Foundation’s Professional Development Committee has partnered with Nova Southeastern University to offer this grant-funded, FREE 49CFR Train the Trainer program for 3 days, October 12-14, 2026, ONLY in person, at IHMM’s Offices at 9200 Corporate Blvd, “The Boss Room”, Rockville, MD 20850.
This FREE 49 CFR course is tailored for anyone involved in the transportation, handling, shipping, receiving, packaging, or management of hazardous materials under the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, as outlined in Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (49 CFR). Attendance at all 3 [three] days is mandatory. Upon registration, each attendee will receive a link to the required course materials and documentation.
This course will be taught by an instructor from Nova Southeastern University
This course is delivered at IHMM’s offices in Rockville, MD, at 9200 Corporate Blvd, the “Boss” room, 1st floor. This is ONLY in person; all times cited are Eastern Time, US. Classes will begin at 8.30 am and run to 5.30 pm each day.

Earning an IHMM professional certification is a significant achievement. It demonstrates that an individual has satisfied established eligibility requirements, acquired a defined body of knowledge, and successfully met an independent standard of professional competence. Certification, however, should not be viewed as the final destination in a professional’s development. The Institute of Hazardous Materials Management has published two substantially revised dangerous-goods transportation resources designed to assist IHMM certificants and other qualified professionals in navigating the increasingly complex legal requirements governing domestic, international, and multimodal shipments.
The IHMM Global Dangerous Goods Transport Compliance Matrix—2026 Update and the IHMM Certificant Dangerous Goods Transportation Compliance Checklist—2026 Update replace earlier materials that no longer adequately reflected the governing regulatory environment. Both documents are current through July 20, 2026, and should be used together as complementary compliance and risk-management tools.

The U.S. Department of Labor continued defending OSHA’s enforcement and compliance assistance programs as Congress considered proposals affecting OSHA staffing, the Susan Harwood Training Grant Program, and NIOSH research funding. OSHA also intensified nationwide outreach under its Heat Illness Prevention initiative, reminding employers that the Occupational Safety and Health Act’s General Duty Clause requires protection from recognized heat hazards through hydration, rest, acclimatization, shade, and employee training.
OSHA announced several significant enforcement actions involving fall protection, machine guarding, excavation safety, and chemical hazards, reinforcing its continued emphasis on the construction and manufacturing sectors.
Significant worker-safety news also emerged during the week. Investigations continued into multiple fatal construction incidents, industrial machinery entanglements, and roadway work-zone fatalities. Several regions also reported heat-related worker illnesses requiring emergency response as prolonged extreme temperatures affected outdoor workers. In addition, emergency responders addressed several industrial fires and hazardous materials incidents, renewing attention to process safety management and emergency preparedness.
Collectively, the week’s developments underscore that heat exposure, falls, struck-by hazards, heavy equipment, and chemical process safety remain the nation’s leading occupational risks, while congressional budget decisions may significantly influence future federal workplace safety enforcement and research.
On July 15, the U.S. Department of Labor proposed $343,000 in penalties against a Houston utility contractor after an excavation collapse hospitalized a worker. OSHA separately cited FleetPride Inc. for 16 serious violations following a fatality at its Corpus Christi facility, alleging confined-space and related safety failures. These cases reinforce employers’ duties to inspect excavations, provide protective systems, evaluate permit-required spaces, test atmospheres, train workers, and maintain rescue procedures.
Significant worker fatalities during the period included a 44-year-old employee crushed by bundled steel beams at a North Charleston, South Carolina, steel facility on July 15, and a 60-year-old worker killed when a skid-steer cab fell during equipment servicing at a Wichita Falls, Texas, rental operation.
NIOSH issued no comparably significant new national announcement during the period; its principal July guidance continued addressing tickborne-disease prevention. OSHA’s heat-emphasis program also remained important as summer temperatures exposed outdoor and indoor workers to recognized heat hazards.
Collectively, the week demonstrated the continuing legal importance of competent supervision, stored-energy control, material securement, confined-space compliance, and heat-illness prevention.
Safety Champions Program
The Safety Champions Program is a new program for employers to develop and implement an effective safety and health program. The main goal of safety and health programs is to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths. The Program incorporates the seven core elements of Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs.
The Safety Champion Program has three Steps (Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced). The Steps are self-guided, and participants may work at their own pace. Safety Champion participants may also request a Safety Champion Special Government Employee (SGE) to assess their safety and health program and Step progress at any time.
