The EPA issued two related notices of proposed rulemaking: Extended Compliance Deadlines and Rescission of Certain PFAS Drinking Water Standards. The proposals would revise federal drinking water requirements for certain per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) under the Safe Drinking Water Act. Specifically, they would extend compliance deadlines for public water systems subject to maximum contaminant levels for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), establish a federal exemption framework for extended compliance requests, and rescind regulatory determinations and related maximum contaminant level requirements for perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid and its ammonium salt (HFPO-DA or GenX), and certain mixtures containing those substances. Comments due July 20.
