What or who motivated you to earn an IHMM credential?
I was working as a Safety Coordinator for a quickly growing company. We were moving from a local to a national level. With this growth, I wanted to have a strong, respected national safety certification.
Are there any opportunities you’re looking forward to as a result of earning an IHMM credential?
I want to be more involved in professional organizations, development, and volunteer opportunities outside of work. I’ve already moved from a coordinator role to a director role.
What would you say to someone who is considering earning an IHMM credential?
Do your research. There are many certifications out there for very specific roles. Find the one that’s right for you; don’t jump in unquestioningly or follow someone else’s path. I find the CSHM focuses more on the business side, and in my heart and mind, I’m very P&L- and business-scaling-focused.
How did you approach the process of earning your credential (e.g., exam prep, experience documentation, professional development, etc.)?
I studied, studied, and studied some more. When I was at my desk at lunch or if I had a few minutes in the evening. I studied extensive safety material to prepare. I don’t remember a study guide at the time, but I do remember general recommendations from IHMM on the material. I was so worried I would fail, but I passed it the first time.
