What motivated you to earn an IHMM credential?

I would have to say that I was motivated to acquire my CSHM when I was a regional EHS Safety Manager and wanted the credentials to move to a higher position (which I did become a Safety Director). It turned out to be a great choice that I made.

What would you say to someone who is considering earning an IHMM credential?

Research what area and type of certification you would like and GO FOR IT! IHMM staff can help you with whatever direction you choose and the certification will help with your career.

How did you approach the process of earning your credential (e.g., exam prep, experience documentation, professional development, etc.)?

I researched IHMM and found them EHS credible, informative and helpful when I wanted to move forward and take the test. Eugene was great!

IHMM Foundation Seeks to Expand CHMM-CSHM Professional Development Programs

As part of the IHMM Foundation’s continuing effort to strengthen the professional development ecosystem supporting our credentials, we recently completed a detailed comparison of the Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) Blueprint and a detailed review comparing the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) Blueprint against the education and training programs currently available on the Foundation’s website.

These analyses—performed from both a credential integrity and workforce development perspective—identified several areas where additional course offerings would materially improve alignment with the CHMM and CSHM blueprint domains and subdomains.

The IHMM Foundation Professional Development Committee begins by working with the 29 education and training vendors we have worked with, giving preference to those vendors who are Friends of the Institute, to identify key programs to strengthen our course offerings.

IHMM Issues Analysis of the OSHA Walking-Working Proposed Rule

Federal Register

Deadline June 5, 2026

The proposal is narrow on its face, but potentially important in practice. OSHA is proposing to amend 29 C.F.R. § 1910.28(b)(9) by deleting the current November 18, 2036, compliance deadline that would otherwise require all fixed ladders extending more than 24 feet above a lower level to be equipped with a personal fall arrest system or ladder safety system. Under the proposal, existing pre-November 19, 2018 fixed ladders could continue to be equipped with a personal fall arrest system, ladder safety system, cage, or well, while new ladders and replaced ladder sections would still have to use a personal fall arrest system or ladder safety system.

OSHA is also expressly seeking comment on a broader alternative: whether it should go further and allow cages or wells to remain an acceptable long-term compliance option instead of requiring personal fall arrest or ladder safety systems on all such ladders.

Important Stories for IHMM Certificants

ISO 14001:2026 Coming

ISO 14001:2026: Environmental Management as Legal Risk Management

ISO 14001 matters because environmental compliance is no longer a narrow facilities function; it is an enterprise legal-risk, governance, procurement, and reputation issue. The 2026 edition strengthens that reality. By requiring a disciplined environmental management system, ISO 14001 gives organizations a defensible framework to identify environmental aspects, evaluate compliance obligations, assign responsibility, control operations, measure performance, audit results, and drive continual improvement. ISO 14001 is a cornerstone of IHMM’s AHMM, CHMM, and CHMP credentials.

For counsel, executives, and environmental professionals, the standard is important because it converts good intentions into documented evidence of due diligence. In enforcement, contracting, insurance, supply-chain review, and ESG scrutiny, an organization that can show a functioning ISO 14001 system is better positioned to prove that it understands its risks and managed them systematically.

The 2026 revision is especially timely. It places clearer emphasis on climate change, biodiversity, resource efficiency, leadership, governance, life-cycle thinking, and value-chain impacts. Those issues increasingly define both regulatory exposure and market access.

ISO 14001 is not a substitute for legal compliance. It is the management architecture that helps make compliance reliable, repeatable, auditable, and credible. For IHMM certificants and environmental professionals, it confirms their central role in protecting organizations, communities, and the environment.

Environmental News for This Week: April 27-May 4, 2026

Workplace Safety News This Week: April 27-May 4, 2026

For the week of April 27–May 4, 2026, federal workplace safety activity was marked by national awareness initiatives, continued enforcement, and ongoing regulatory implementation by the U.S. Department of Labor, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

OSHA and NIOSH jointly launched the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction (May 4–8, 2026), a nationwide outreach effort encouraging employers to pause work to address fall hazards—the leading cause of death in construction. This initiative reinforces employer obligations under OSHA’s fall protection standards and highlights the agency’s continued emphasis on prevention through training and engagement.

Enforcement activity during the period remained focused on falls, trenching, and machine guarding violations, with several citations issued following serious injuries and fatalities. OSHA also continued whistleblower enforcement, reinforcing protections for employees reporting safety concerns under federal statutes.

On the regulatory front, OSHA maintained outreach regarding implementation of the revised Hazard Communication Standard, with employers preparing for upcoming phased compliance deadlines involving chemical classification, labeling, and safety data sheets.

NIOSH communications during the week emphasized ongoing research in respiratory protection, exposure science, and construction safety, supporting evidence-based policy and prevention strategies.

Collectively, these developments reflect a consistent federal posture of active enforcement, national prevention initiatives, and sustained investment in occupational safety and health research.

Safety Champions Program

The Safety Champions Program is a new program for employers to develop and implement an effective safety and health program. The main goal of safety and health programs is to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths. The Program incorporates the seven core elements of Recommended Practices for Safety and Health Programs.

The Safety Champion Program has three Steps (Introductory, Intermediate, and Advanced). The Steps are self-guided, and participants may work at their own pace. Safety Champion participants may also request a Safety Champion Special Government Employee (SGE) to assess their safety and health program and Step progress at any time.

IHMM is a Premier Partner of the Falls 2026 Campaign

May 4-8, 2026
What is a Safety Stand-Down?

A Safety Stand-Down is a voluntary event for employers to talk directly to employees about safety. Any workplace can hold a stand-down by taking a break to focus on “Fall Hazards” and reinforcing the importance of “Fall Prevention”. Employers of companies not exposed to fall hazards can also use this opportunity to have a conversation with employees about the other job hazards they face, protective methods, and the company’s safety policies and goals. It can also be an opportunity for employees to talk to management about falls and other job hazards they see.

The OSHA Certificate of Recognition form is now open and to share promotional materials for this form.

The Falls Campaign measures the reach of the Stand-Down through participation in this form. We strongly encourage partners to promote this form widely and repeatedly to make sure everyone who participated in the Stand-Down is recognized and counted. The certificate is available in English and Spanish.

Global DG Transport Regulatory Update: April 28-May 4, 2026

IHMM Global DG Transport Compliance Matrix (2025–2026)
IHMM Certificant Compliance Checklist

Week of April 28-May 4, 2026

For the week of April 28–May 4, 2026, North American hazardous-materials regulation was driven by PHMSA interpretation activity, Canadian TDG modernization, and Mexico’s continued post-incident tightening of LP gas and limited-quantity transport rules.

United States

The most concrete U.S. development was PHMSA’s April 28, 2026 interpretation letter, Ref. No. 26-0019, addressing shipping-paper obligations under 49 C.F.R. Parts 171–180. PHMSA’s interpretation activity matters because shipping papers remain the legal foundation for classification, hazard communication, emergency response, and enforcement. During the same period, PHMSA’s pending interpretations page reflected the agency’s newer public-facing process for regulatory interpretation requests, following its April procedural changes.

PHMSA’s larger regulatory posture also remained important. The HM-215R harmonization NPRM—proposing alignment with international standards for shipping names, hazard classes, packing groups, special provisions, packaging, air limits, and vessel stowage—remained the central pending hazardous-materials rulemaking after the April comment deadline. PHMSA also had an open modernization ANPRM concerning hazardous materials associated with spacecraft payloads and components, with comments due April 29, 2026.

Two U.S. news events underscored the stakes. On April 27, a jet-fuel spill at Oakland Airport reportedly released roughly 200–250 gallons onto the tarmac, with some fuel entering a storm drain before containment actions. On April 29, a fatal liquid tar/asphalt release at a South Houston industrial facility required hazmat response and investigation.

Desk Reference Update Volunteers Needed – The AHMP Professional Development Committee and the Board of Directors are collaborating to facilitate a comprehensive update to the Desk Reference and EHMM Course. With content across our 47 chapters now six years old, this project is more than just a “face-lift”; we are integrating new material, correcting errors, and developing a sustainable system for more frequent updates. To streamline this ambitious task, we have formed seven expert-led teams—each headed by an AHMP Board Member—to review pre-researched recommendations and refine technical content. We have set a lofty goal to complete all updates by the end of 2026, with a “stretch goal” of October 1, 2026, to facilitate a grand rollout at the EHS HazMat Summit. Volunteers who join a team will receive official credit as an editor, earn contact hours toward their CEUs, and those who contribute to at least five chapter updates will receive a complimentary PDF copy of the finished Desk Reference. Legionnaires’ Disease: An Escalating Risk

By Abby Roberts

CDC surveillance data shows that cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been increasing since the early 2000s, aside from a brief drop in 2020. It’s one of the few diseases in the U.S. to demonstrate an upward trend. “If there was a better prevention mentality, that could be changed,” said Brian Shelton, MPH. “The fact that it’s going up shows that what’s currently happening isn’t working.”

With regular virtual meetings and ongoing engagement through a private online community, SBUGs connect you with professionals, organizations, and solution providers tackling the same high-risk challenges, empowering you to benchmark performance and implement effective strategies.
